What currency does Kazakhstan use, and how much cash do I need?

Reportedlast checked 2026-08-19

The currency is the Kazakhstani tenge (KZT). Cards work in most places, so you need little cash. Keep some tenge for small vendors, markets and tips. Exchange rates are better in the city than at the airport, and there are plenty of ATMs in central Astana. The tenge moves against major currencies, so any tenge figure on a third-party site is probably out of date. Check a live rate before you budget.
