What is the difference between Astana and Almaty?
Reportedlast checked 2026-08-19
Almaty is Kazakhstan's largest city and its former capital: older, greener, denser, set against high mountains, with a milder climate and a stronger cafe and cultural scene. Astana is the political capital, newer, flatter, colder and more purpose-built, and it is where the government and the country's technology institutions sit. Network School is in Astana. Almaty is a worthwhile domestic trip and a common weekend or extended-break destination, and the flight between the two is short and frequent.
