What is winter in Astana actually like?
Reportedlast checked 2026-08-19
This is the question to take most seriously. Astana is one of the coldest capital cities on earth. Deep winter brings daytime temperatures well below freezing and cold snaps down to −30°C or lower, on flat open steppe with nothing to break the wind, so it feels worse than the number. Snow lies from around November into March or April, and December days are short. It's liveable because the city is built for it. District heating keeps interiors genuinely warm, buildings and transport are designed for the cold, and life moves indoors and carries on. The change of season is what catches people out: the ten-minute walk you wouldn't think about in October becomes a decision in January. If you've never lived through a real continental winter, expect it to affect your mood and how often you go out, as well as what you wear.
